Why Captain D’s Thrives in Communities of All Sizes

Fast-casual seafood is underserved in most markets, and Captain D’s fills the demand

From dense urban areas to rural towns, Captain D’s stands out as a restaurant that quickly becomes an integral part of the community’s dining experience. From Boiling Springs, South Carolina, to Nashville, Tennessee, customers rely on our high-quality menu’s traditional fare and grilled seafood to fill an important niche in their dining experience.

For almost 50 years, Captain D’s has been the fast-casual seafood leader. With over 500 restaurants in 21 states, we consistently post the No.1 average unit volume for seafood QSRs. We drive industry-leading growth with our vibrant coastal atmosphere, upgraded diningware and menu boards featuring our innovative blend of seafood classics, new grilled-food and kids’ meal offerings — all while we continue to do what we do best: serve high-quality seafood with warm hospitality at an affordable price.

“When it comes to a fast-casual restaurant that doesn’t compete in the crowded burgers, pizza, and chicken space, Captain D’s is the franchise to buy,” says Michael Arrowsmith, Captain D’s Chief Development Officer. “Our customers are loyal to the Captain D’s brand, and our restaurants become an integral part of the community.”

From small towns to crowded metro centers, Captain D’s owners enjoy the benefits of an underserved market, a unique dining experience and the value of making Captain D’s a valued part of their community.

When Captain D’s comes to town, it’s an event

When a franchise owner announces their intent to bring our iconic seafood franchise to their community, it’s a big deal. That’s what happened to brothers Keith and Chris McBrayer when they put up the first “Coming Soon” billboards for a Captain D’s in West Point, Miss.

“The anticipation was building so that when opening week finally got here, it was exciting,” Keith says.

Customer response was great, and the restaurant set the all-time company record for first-week sales.

“The local T.V. news commented that our grand opening was bigger than the Walmart opening,” Keith says.

After initially signing a three-unit agreement, the McBrayer brothers rapidly expanded plans, and now they anticipate owning five restaurants in smaller communities across Mississippi.

Captain D’s stands out against the competition

Because we don’t compete in the overcrowded burgers-pizza-chicken segment of the QSR market, Captain D’s becomes the restaurant of choice for individuals looking to break out of the usual fast food dining habits and try something new. Customers want a diverse selection of delicious dishes built around low-fat, low-carb meals. Often, they have a hard time finding it, and that’s where Captain D’s comes in.

“Captain D’s is a great fit in many areas,” Michael says. “We conduct extensive research to determine the optimum location for our restaurants, so we can find success even in large, developed markets, as well as small, rural areas. We are seeing strong sales in our new stores, regardless of the size of the town.”

Captain D’s provides families with something they don’t find anywhere else: a sit-down dining experience built around a budget-friendly menu of quality food served with warm hospitality on upscale plateware.

Seafood franchise taps an underserved market

For many, seafood is a “special-occasion meal” due to the limited choices for high-quality seafood in many communities. Captain D’s makes seafood an affordable, health-conscious option for consumers who are looking for a seafood fix.

Captain D’s has been the seafood leader for almost 50 years. Now in a period of record-setting growth, we are attracting a new generation of devoted seafood fans. The results show both on the bottom line and on the faces of the people in the dining room.

“The best metric in our industry to measure success is the voice of the customer — those growing sales numbers,” says Keith Davis, Chief Financial Officer with Captain D’s. “This is really due to our CEO Phil Greifeld’s strategic vision of reinvigorating the brand with our new restaurant design. It has upgraded our dining experience, and our franchise owners do a wonderful job of what we do best: serving the highest-quality seafood in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere at affordable prices.”
